Denzil and his colleague Ron Blaskett created this “Hillbilly” segment for the Happy Show at GTV9 circa 1958/59. Denzil played the part of “Skin and Bones Jones” the hillbilly farmer who had the philosophy “always put off to tomorrow what we could do today”. His comic foil was Skinny Jones, one of Ron Blaskett’s numerous ventriloquial dolls. The witty scripts were written by Ron.
This was one of the many extra-curricular activities Denzil squeezed into his busy schedule, just for the fun of doing it. Ron Blaskett describes how Denzil could learn lines quickly. He would get made up then come down to the studio just to do this segment. This was live television before the advent of video tape, broadcast directly to air, mistakes and all.
