Rugged up at Pinewood Studios in the 1952 English winter, actor Terence Morgan listens to a replay of an interview on Denzil’s portable tape recorder.
Denzil and Dot travelled by ship to the UK and Europe in 1952 where Denzil recorded numerous interviews for Australian radio that were mailed back home and broadcast under the collective title “An Argus Newsreader Abroad”.
Tape recording was still a very new technology and people were amazed to see such a small, portable machine. The device contained heavy batteries to power the valve (tube) electronics and the transport was driven by a clockwork mechanism which had to be wound up by hand. Dot is watching the tape recorder while Denzil holds the microphone.
Terence Morgan later became known to Australian children as Sir Francis Drake in the British television series of the same name.
